I am Sian Ellingworth, founder of Buddies

I started Buddies, because like you, I had a problem in that my son hated cleaning his teeth.

I was determined to solve this and Buddies was born. I now believe that everyone deserves good oral hygiene and I am breaking down the barriers that prevent this.

From concerned mother to entrepreneur

My journey is one from adversity to opportunity when I founded Buddies - hear my story...

Buddies work closely with The Oral Health Foundation (OHF), a charity dedicated to improving oral health and wellbeing by providing impartial advice, information and support to those who need it most.

This means they work to reduce inequalities in oral health by providing information and support for children, the elderly and vulnerable, people with disabilities and those living in deprivation all around the world.

Not only that, but they also help drive positive change by providing information to the decision makers in this country.

“I am a huge admirer of the work they do and feel that Buddies is totally aligned with their mission. I’m delighted therefore that we are in discussions with the OHF and planning together how we can best support their work.”

This includes us supporting National Smile Month, their largest and longest-running campaign between 13th May – 13th June 2019

In addition, we are keen to literally put our money where our mouth is by making a regular contribution to their cause.

What next for Buddies

I started the Buddies journey focused on improving children’s oral hygiene habits because of the issues I’d experienced with my own son.

Since then, I’ve had feedback that Buddies products are being used in a much broader way. Carers and Dental Health Professionals have reported that Buddies Toothpaste is making a real difference to those with special needs and the elderly, especially those with dementia or dysphagia.

It does confirm my belief that making a process as pleasant as possible, will naturally encourage people to want to do it.

Buddies Toothpaste is proving successful for many people with special needs in terms of making brushing their teeth more enjoyable, so they are prepared to allow their carers to do it for them

This is great news and has led to us broadening our mission:

“Oral health for all – no exceptions”

making products that help break down the barriers to oral health

It has also helped me prioritise our new product development. During this year, we have plans to launch several new products:

  • Buddies for grown ups – an adult range
  • Version 2 of the Buddies Toothbrush (smaller to handle, softer bristles, variable power function)
  • New Secret Formula Toothpaste: If your child likes no other toothpaste; try this!
  • An ultra-soft small manual brush for those with special needs
